Challenge Coin Sizes Explained: Which Size Is Right for You?

Challenge coins are usually sized between 1.5 and 2.5 inches in diameter, and the size you pick affects both how much detail your design can hold and how much each coin costs. There is no single "correct" size — it depends on your design and your budget.

1.5" — Compact and Economical

The smallest common size, and usually the least expensive per unit. Works well for simple designs with a bold central emblem and short text, or for high-quantity giveaways and fundraisers where cost per unit matters most.

1.75" – 2.0" — The Standard Range

Most challenge coins land in this range. It is large enough to hold a unit crest, front and back text, and moderate detail without feeling oversized in a pocket. If you are not sure what size to pick, this range is the safest default — it is what most retirement, deployment, and recognition coins use.

2.25" – 2.5" — Maximum Detail

The larger sizes cost more per unit but can carry significantly more detail: multiple insignia, longer text, fine linework. These sizes are common for flagship unit coins, command coins, or any design where the artwork itself is the main selling point.
